Catching Up!

A bit of catching up to do today. It is the last day of our sale, so this evening I'll be putting some things back on shelves, and packing the rest away. I'm thinking of having a 'Bargain Basket' going through the year; what do you think?

Stitch, Quilting Arts and Mollie Makes magazines arrived in the week, together with a new Debbie Bliss pattern book which has sold so well that I've had to order more already!

The last issue of Stitch sold out very quickly, and this issue has some lovely projects inside. Quilting Arts continues to inspire, and the article by Pauline Verrinder is a must for me, particularly as these are the lines my brain seems to be working on at the moment too! There are also projects on combining photography with textiles, sketchbooks, birds and monoprinting together with fabric houses and fabric design. Mollie Makes as some great felt, fabric and stitch projects, as well as crochet.

Can't wait to get back my studio so I can do some creative work!

You might remember that at the end of September last year I was asked to submit four pieces of work for display at the Eastgate Centre in Basildon for their Jeans event and Kay Renwick and Sue Langley valiantly offered to help. Well, now we have them back in The Gallery, and they will be on display for the next few weeks. They are a lot bigger than I remember!

New Year Sale

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and a great New Year, I had a restful Christmas, but New Year has been a bit frantic so far, getting ready for the sale which started today, 5th January. We have already been busy, with quite a few things going, but there is still plenty left. We have 20% discount on selected books, yarn, beads and kits plus extra discounts on a range of goods including fabric paint at £1.50 a jar, magazines from £1 and two goody boxes, one with items for £1 and the other with bits for 50p!

(I really should have ironed the tablecloths before I set everything out, but then housekeeping never was my strong point!)

I need to clear some space for the new stock I'm hoping to get in over the next few months, so watch this space!

Our opening hours this week are from 10am to 4pm, and next week we go back to our usual hours of 10am to 5pm, although on Sundays we will now close at 4pm. Lots of time for you to banish those post-Christmas blues with a little retail therapy!

New beginnings

I don't usually make New Year resolutions; too much likelihood of failure, but I think now is the time to start thinking about what I do and how I do it, with a view to getting things done and not wasting so much time!

To start with, we have relaunched the Craft Arena website with a fresh new look. It should make navigation and the whole shopping process easier. Let me know what you think. I'm holding a draw at the end of January among all those who have registered on the new site. The prize is a Craft Arena goody bag and a £50 Gift Voucher, so do visit and sign up.

Next job is to write my Christmas Cards!

We had a brilliant weekend with Lynda Monk, lots of you came along to see her and buy her new book. I'm hoping Lynda will be holding an exhibition and some workshops later in 2012. I'll let you know as soon as we have arranged dates. I took a couple of pictures while Lynda was here, but they haven't come out very well. She wouldn't thank me for putting them here, so you'll have to just imagine!

I've been painting Bondaweb today for my college project. I did have a plan, but it's not going the way I wanted, so it's back to the drawing board (literally!). We have been given a restricted colourscheme of just black and white. I'm hoping to work on it a bit more this week, and I'll post progress later.

Lynda Monk

Lynda's first day at Craft Arena went really well. Lots of people came to see her demonstrate and sign her books. You can see her here talking to Kay. Lynda has bought loads of samples with her showing her use of tissue paper with procion dye, paint, transfer foil and other media.

Lynda is with us again tomorrow (Sunday), so if you can make it over, do come and say 'Hello', she would love to meet you.

We are open from 10am to 4pm.

The Tonia wool has arrived this afternoon and I've already sold several balls. I definately won't be getting any more this side of Christmas, so don't delay if you need more. The colours are lovely and include three with a metallic thread running through them.

Don't forget our very special weekend ahead, when Lynda Monk (purplemissus) will be visiting Craft Arena to sign her new book 'Fabulous Surfaces'. Knowing Lynda, I'm sure she will be bringing lots of samples, will have some of her work to show you and will also be demonstrating some of her great techniques. I've been on a couple of workshops with her, and got so much out of them. If you do get the chance, do pop in to see what she has to show; you will be inspired!

This and That

The Tonia yarn which came in a few weeks ago has already sold out. I've ordered more and it should be in within the next few days. I'm also expecting some Clover needlefelting tools as used by Kirsty Allsopp on Kirsty's Handmade Britain. I'm putting some by for those of you who have asked, and if anyone else wants one, just let me know.

My new, updated website is nearly ready, and we hope to be launching it on Tuesday 21st December. That is assuming that I manage to get all the stock on that I need to; we may have to add some things at a later stage, but I'll keep you posted. Here is a taster for you.

I'm shutting shop early today as I have to drive a fair way this evening and want to get a start before the rush hour.

A sad couple of weeks. The loss of two friends is hard to take. Not only did we lose Sarah Lawrence, but Bonny Osborne was also taken from us far too early. Two inspirational textile artists who will be sadly missed.

I was really sad to hear today of the sudden death of Sarah Lawrence. Sarah was an inspirational textile artist, teacher and friend. She encouraged me to start up my business and was always a joy to talk to and do business with. My thoughts are with David and her family. I'll miss her as will many others. Rest in peace Sarah.

Preparation

I've been doing a bit of preparatory work today for the projects I'm currently involved in. I've got to do three pieces for my Minerva Group and at least one for college; then there is a piece for ERTF! I think I know what I'm doing for ERTF - we have to do a button in black, white and red - some of the pieces I've done in monochrome for college will come in handy there. We did printing with oil paint and a pasta machine last week!

I've wanted to do something with this picture of a swallowtail butterfly from David Attenborough's Life on Earth ever since I saw the programme and got the book in ..... (looks at the fly leaf) GOODNESS! 1979!!! I think it's about time! My initial reaction is for machine embroidery, but I think that organza might get involved somewhere!

Brother Sewing Machine Weekend

I've just realised that I haven't mentiond my first Brother Demonstration weekend which will be held from Friday 2nd December until Sunday 4th December and I will be open late on Friday evening until 8pm for anyone who can't get along during the day.

We will have all the new Laura Ashley sewing machines available for you to have a play with, including the fabulous Innovis Ie. Do come along to see what these machines are capable of and, if you book a time slot prior to the event, you will receive a free gift just for coming. You are welcome just to turn up of course, but if you do book you will guarantee a place on a machine of your choice.

There is no obligation to buy, and it is an opportunity to have a play so I look forward to seeing you there.

Mollie Makes, Christmas kits and Newsletter

The latest issue of Mollie Makes arrived today. The cover kit has some cute little buttons to stitch and inside there are plenty of ideas to get you crafting into the Autumn. You can make monsters in felt, a pretty patchwork pillow, a baby blanket, tea cosy, lovely layered corsages, a diary cover and mug cosies. I really like this magazine, which continues to inspire.

I'm busy trying to get a newsletter out this week. There is news of a special event that we are holding in conjunction with Brother Sewing Machines, together with information about our Christmas opening hours and advance notice of our sale.

I'm slowly printing out those that need to be posted - they will go out over the course of the next week - and I'm hoping to get the email version out this week. This will probably be the last newsletter in the current format as I'm hoping that the new website that Ray is working on will be able to generate a nice shiny newsletter that will be easier to access.

My Buttonbag Christmas kits have also arrived today. They are so sweet I can hardly stop from pulling open the boxes and starting to stitch them myself. Must resist though!

Exhibition and New Products

I can't believe it's so long since my last post! I've got lots to tell you, including news of a new exhibition, new magazines and some brilliant new Vilene fibres.

Night and Day Textile Group have their first exhibition at Craft Arena with a wonderful display of work. You can see some of their work here, but the photographs don't do them justice, so do come along and see for yourself. The exhibition is on now until 4th November.

Now the magazines. Somerset Studio this month has an Autumn feel about it, with lots of inspiration and projects. International Quilt Festival is an annual publication which has plenty of projects for the quilters out there. With cushions, bags, beads, pin cushions, covers, runners, quilts and embellishment there should be something here for everyone!

Vilene have produced a new spunbonded fibre called Zeelon, which is just great for textile use. It is similar to Lutradur and Evolon in that it can be cut, glued, sprayed, painted, printed, embroidered, distressed and dyed, but it can also be coloured with water colour paints and has a smoother finish providing great light transmssion even when using the heavier weights. Three weights are available and I've shown them here although it may be difficult to judge their qualities by the pictures. I'm expecting stock next week, and if you would like a free sample, just leave a comment on this post, then pop into the shop to collect it. New Gleam

Just thought I'd share the new pots of Craftynotions Gleam that arrived yesterday. Three new scrummy colours for using to highlight and enhance texture. From top to bottom they are Spice, Imperial and Sage. I've used them here on black Hearty air-dry clay stamped with the Old Rose Karantha moulding mat. I just love these gilding waxes!

New Books and Magazines

Quite a few magazines and books have come in over the last week. Here are a selection.

Quilting Arts Issue 53 focuses on surface design and stitch including slik screen printing, block printing, monoprinting, recycling and free-motion stitching.

Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors Gifts havelots of goodies to make with a seasonal theme, but many projects can be themed to any time of the year.

Debbie Bliss Magazine shows some of her latest designs with a selection of patterns from her yarn ranges.

Talking of Cloth Paper Scissors, their new publication is a retrospective of some of the best articles and projects from its first six years. This has some great ideas, many of which can be transferred to both paper and textiles.

Block printing: Techniques for Linoleum and Wood, shows the basic ideas for using these age-old techniques, and the good news is that I am now stocking brayers, soft sculpt lino and, as soon as they come in, lino cutting tools.

These will all be on my website soon, but I only keep a few copies of the books in stock, and some the magazines sell out very quickly, so don't hang around too long!

Busy Weekend at Barleylands

I've been looking forward to this weekend. The Craft Village is hosting a special Open Weekend with crafters and artists holding taster sessions and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

I will be demonstrating several techniques including metal embossing, Friendly Plastic and hand embroidery on Saturday moving on to include machine wrapped cords and surprise techniques on Sunday.

Drop in and you can have a go too. You can make a metal embossed card or learn a new embroidery stitch with me and also visit some of my colleagues to see and have a taster with them.

Pure Jeanius

This is the second panel for the Pure Jeanius event. This was a lot quicker to construct than the first: I've selected interesting portions of jeans and collaged (is that a word?) them together. The panels will be on display this weekend at the Eastgate Shopping Centre during this special event. Find out more here.

Voting has started for the Crafts Beautiful Awards. Craft Arena has been nominated in the Independent Store South East category. If you feel I deserve it, please vote for me here. You do have to plough through the other categories to find me, but I'm there somewhere!

Material Girls: Primary Colour

I'm at the studio today for two reasons: The Material Girls have been putting up their exhibition 'Primary Colour' which opens tomorrow and I've got to finish off a couple of pieces that I'm making for Eastgate Shopping Centre that have to be delivered later this week.

Primary Colour features some of the work that The Material Girls exhibited in Jersey earlier in the year, together with some new work. The exhibition is on until Sunday 2nd October, so do come and take a look.

I have been commissioned to construct four pieces for a denim event ' Pure Jeanius' taking place at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon next weekend. Two of the pieces are being tackled by Kay Renwick and Sue Langley, and I'm doing the other two. This is the first of mine to be finished. These are the largest pieces I've ever worked on, being 40 by 50 inches, and have been a bit outside my comfort zone, but I'm quite happy with them, considering I only had 8 weeks to put them all together! At least I now know I can work to a tight timescale! Unfortunately, I'm away for the weekend with Kay, so we won't be able to see them in situ. If you happen to be in Basildon at the weekend, do let me know how they look.

New Books

Layered Textiles: New Surfaces with Heat Tools, Machine and Hand Stitch by Kim Thittichai has just arrived. I've been waiting for this for ages so I'm going to take a break, have a coffee and indulge myself for half an hour. From a quick look-through, this is a great ideas book with wonderful illustrations to inspire you.

Also in is Colour in Art Quilts by Janet Twinn. This beautiful book is for quilters who want a deeper understanding of how to use colour in their work. It has practical exercises and inspiring examples.

Both these books incidentally, have lovely strokable covers!

I've been waiting for some of the A-Z Embroidery series for some time and these arrived today too.

Material Girls

As part of The Material Girls exhibition which starts at Craft Arena on 20th September, Diane Kelsey will be holding a workshop at Craft Arena making this great seaside inspired heart using simple stitching techniques. Places are limited, so if you would like to join us let me know.

First attempts

This is my birthday present and my first attempt at spinning and plying wool. For those of you who are expert, I must just say that I want to make slubby uneven yarn to put into my textile work. This one incorporates a little Angelina fibre together with two shades of Craftynotions Merino Wool Tops. I'm quite pleased with the end result. You are supposed to hank and wash the yarn after you have plyed it, but I'm not sure I have the patience for that - too impatient to stitch with it!

I'm hoping to find someone to hold some spinning classes in the studio. Let me know if you are interested, or if you know any good tutors who might be interested in teaching here.

New Goodies!

This year's issue of Quilting Arts Gifts Magazine arrived today. It has over 20 seasonal projects and lots of creative ideas for stich, fabric collage, photos, stamping and embellishing. This is always a great magazine for Christmas gift inspiration.

I had some exciting news the other day which I've been dying to share. Craft Arena has been nominated in the Independant Store category of the Crafts Beautiful 2011 Craft Awards! Thank you so much if you voted for me. I'll let you know when voting for the final choice begins - I think it is some time in September.

I've finally received the novelty scarf yarn I'd been waiting for. It is called Tonia, and is a ribbon yarn with large holes which when knitted turns into a lovely wavy scarf. Each ball knits about 1½ metres and costs just £6.99. It comes in the lovely aqua/blue you see here, brown/cream, grey/white and fuschia and you receive a pattern with each ball.

I've also received gauge 10 and 20 crochet cotton in white, which I know lots of people have been waiting for.

I'm off on Thursday as it's my birthday. I'm picking up a new car (my present to me) and hopefully playing with my new toy from Ray - a spinning wheel! Can't wait to create loads of textured yarns to use in my textile work. If anyone would be interested in attending a spinning workshop, do let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Knitting Needles at last! Free Draw!

I finally received my shipment of bamboo knitting needles today and I'm really pleased with them. I've asked some of my customers to trial these for me and they've come back with some really good reports. They are made using Bamboo which is a renewable resource, warmer on the hands than metal and therefore better, I'm told, for those with dexterity problems e.g. arthritis. They also have the needle size on the needle shaft so you won't get them muddled up.

The straight needles come in sizes 2.00mm to 12.00mm. I also have double pointed needles in the same size range. The smaller double pointed sizes have 6 needles per pack and the larger ones 5 per pack.

I also have bamboo crochet hooks in sizes 3.00mm to 12.00mm.

To celebrate the arrival of these needles, I'm giving some away in a free draw. To enter the draw you just need to comment on this blog post (below). If you follow the blog with Google Friend Connect you will receive an extra entry. The draw will take place on 2nd September (it would be 1st but I'm not around that day as it's my birthday!).

Minerva Exhibition

Had a great evening last night at the preview of our exhibition. Lots of friends and collegues turned up, as well as some unexpected visitors - particularly Ray who I thought couldn't make it as he had to work, but he managed to get off early and surprised me! You can see him here admiring Kay and Yvonne's work with Elizabeth who was so impressed she bought Yvonne's 'Distant World's'. The exhibition continues until 4th September, so do come along and take a look if you are in the area.

This is my piece 'Life on Mars' inspired by a recent NASA announcement that they have found evidence of flowing water on Mars. It started off as an experiment with stencilling puff paint on to Lutradur then painting with Metallic Masters paint. I wanted a rusty colour and of course I'd run out - a whole shop full of paint, and I didn't have the one I wanted! So I had to mix various colours of Dye na Flow until I got the colour I wanted. The circles are a mix of buttonhole stitched rings, Flower Stitching on felt and some little buttonhole rings I bought from Craftynotions years ago that have just been waiting to be used. These were soaked in Lumiere Halo Pink Gold and various other Dye na Flow colours to get the effect I wanted. I finished off with a wrapped cord to echo the canyons on Mars. The picture below has the rings in place before I stitched them down - I often take a photo when I'm placing things so I don't forget where to put them when I start stitching.

Now I have a major project in conjunction with Eastgate Shopping Centre that needs finishing before the end of September, so I'm off to paint a giant canvas. And I thought I'd be able to relax and take things easy after City & Guilds?

New Magazines

Two new magazines have arrived; Cloth Paper Scissors and Somerset Studio.

It's funny how sometimes you buy things and then see a lot more potential in them. When I was in Sainsbury's this morning buying nibbles for the Minerva Exhibition private view this evening, I popped a packet of paper doilies in my trolley. Useful I thought. And blow me down, if there isn't a project in CPS using them! This issue also has a lot of steampunky stuff to inspire you, plus reduction printing, papermaking, mosaics and artist profiles that always inspire.

Somerset Studio has a halloween feel about it, plus a project using circles (also echoing something I've been doing!). Birds, faces and text also feature in another jam-packed issue.

I'm just about ready for the private view this evening. I hope I will see some of you there, if not, see you soon.

I've been frantically trying to finish my last piece for our first exhibition. Finally finished the stitching this evening, and although I would have liked a little more time I'm happy with it. Just a little tinkering to do tomorrow!

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 24th August at 10 am with a private view the previous evening from 6 - 9pm. If you are able to come, do let me know and I'll send you an official invitation.

The focal point of our exhibition is the three themes of Odyssey, Icon and Primary Reaction. Other pieces will also be on display.

Trials and Tribulations!

I recently ordered some knitting needles and crochet hooks from India. Little did I know the hoops I'd have to go through to get them!

First, paying for them was a nightmare. I had to set up a special payment method through my bank which took about a week. They were shipped as soon as this went through but then there was another problem; Customs. I have had to set myself up as an importer, and wait until I get clearance. All the while this is going on the shipping company are charging me £10 a day storage!

Oh well, we live and learn!

I did have a good day on Monday though. Ray and I went to Colchester Zoo with Emily. We had intended to visit Framlingham, but Emily was given the choice of a castle or a zoo and the animals won. I think she was two the last time we went, and has it changed! The visit to the tortoise enclosure may have been more educational that a castle - it certainly drew the crowds!

I've just finished moving the shop around a bit; I received a stand for my books yesterday, so had to incorporate that somehow. I'm also expecting new stock in the next week or so, and I'll need room for that!

My grand daughter, Emily is staying with us for a few days. She has been helping me in the shop and made me make cakes! These are almond and marmalade muffins. We also made shortbread, but that didn't stay around long enough to take a photo.

I've finished one piece for our Minerva Group exhibition which opens on 23rd August, nearly finished the second and I think I know what I'm going to do for the third.

I've been asked to become involved in an exciting project in conjunction with the Eastgate Centre in Basildon. I've had an initial meeting, and need to talk to a few people before I can confirm things, but I'll keep you up to date as soon as I know more.

Just a quick note to say that I've passed my City & Guilds Diploma in Embroidery!

I know I shouldn't have worried, but as my dearly beloved said, it's what I do. I feel bereft in a funny sort of way. All those years, all that work, and now it's finished. We were discussing this over lunch and talking about those people we've met along the way who have been so glad to finished that they haven't picked up a needle for months or even years. I can't imagine that; I can't wait to get stuck into my next project, but this time I'll be doing it for me!

Anyway, I'm off out tonight on a double celebration. It's also our wedding anniversary today; 38 years married to wonderful Ray!

The End

Well, for better or worse, it's finished. I can't say this has been the most enjoyable piece of work I've done, and I'm not particularly pleased with it, but it's done at last.

This was the last piece I needed to finish for my City and Guilds Diploma in Embroidery, and it has been a bit of a slog. My tutor is coming over tomorrow to sign it off, so I hope I've done enough! This was my site specific; it had to be designed with a specific place in mind. I chose an Olympic theme to be hung in the new sporting village in Basildon. Of course, it won't really end up there, but don't tell anyone!

There are two layers; the first is Evolon on which I've stamped and applied text and pictorial elements. The verse is from the Olympic Hymn. The top sheet is Lutradur Crash on which I've stitched a Greek Key symbol in gold, silver and bronze and figures using transfer paint and stitched in gold. Not sure you will be able to see it though. I've used machine stitching exclusively on this. It was hard to resist adding some hand stitching, and I think that's been one of the problems with it. The size was also outside my comfort zone - I prefer working a lot smaller. All I've got to worry about now is whether I pass or not. Not long to wait!

Angelina and Karantha

I held an Angelina workshop on Wednesday, and typically, forgot to take photos. I did however manage a sample of my own using the Craftynotions Karantha Stamp 'Bloom' with some Sugarplum Angelina that I was quite pleased with. I layered the Angelina over the stamp, placed silicone paper on top and ironed over. I then cut out the flower shapes and stitched together with Valdani perle using straight stitch and a few French Knots. I often forget how great Angelina is to work with - must do more!

Quilting Arts

The latest issue of Quilting Arts arrived this morning. I know I always say it, but this is a super issue. Lots of ideas for colouring fabric including transfer dyes and ice dyeing. I tried snow dyeing and got some terrific results, but it is a bit of a pain waiting for a white winter; this lets you use a similar technique all through the year. There is also stencilling, monoprinting and finger painting, stamping and more on resists (tapioca this time!).

I'm getting on OK with my City and Guilds. I've nearly finished the history project, my design project is done and all I need to do now is finish my final piece. It is evolving, and hopefully I'll be able to get on with that in the next couple of days.

Linda Miller

I went to the Linda Miller workshop run by Chelmsford Embroiderers' Guild on Saturday. At one stage it was doubtful if I'd make it as I couldn't get anyone to look after the shop, but my husband 'volunteered' at the last minute which enabled me to go. I felt that as he had managed so admirably at Regional Day, he'd have no trouble. He was playing his sympathy card though - I think people were buying because they felt sorry for him. He did so well, that I'll have to ask him again!

I had a great day enhancing my machine embroidery skills - I learned lots! Here is my piece which I finished today! It was based on an image of a Persian peacock . His legs are a bit wobbly, but I'm quite pleased with it overall.

Busy, Busy

It's been a busy week. Held a needlefelting workshop on Wednesday with Lynne and Shirley - these are the results: I particularly like the goldfish! didn't they do well?

Then in the evening went out with the Embroiderers' Guild Committee to celebrate Regional Day - we felt we needed bit of relexation after all the hard work. My favourite dessert was on the menu - Eton Mess - so naturally I had to order it. Here is mine, and then you can see Nikki eating hers! I'm going to a machine embroidery workshop with Linda Miller tomorrow, and Ray is holding the fort at the shop! I 'inducted' him at Regional Day, but this will be the first time on his own. Be kind to him!

Regional Day

I had a great time at Embroiderers' Guild Regional Day on Saturday - tiring though! This picture is taken just as Ray and I had finished setting up - funny how some people can't wait to start shopping!

This was Ray's first time helping me, and he did a sterling job manning the till and taking card payments, even if he had little idea about what he was actually selling! I didn't get a chance to take any pictures of the event itself, but you will be able to see pictures on Sharne's blog soon.

Now it is all over, I'm having to find room for all the goodies I had left over. I've refreshed the range of Valdani cotton threads - both the machine and perle varigated - with some lovely colours, some of which I've not had before. I've got some very pretty Oliver Twists dyed silk fibres, scrim (dyed and plain for those of you who have been asking for some) and threads including some natty little bags of threads and fibres called 'Tidbits'. Irresistible.

Also new are some great stumpwork kits by Sally Kemp.

I'm going to try and get as much of this as I can on the website over the next few days, so those of you who can't get to the shop, bear with me.

Once I've got everything back on the shelves, I have to concentrate on my C&G - only 4 weeks to get it all finished! PANIC!!!!!

Still Packing

I'm still packing up for Regional Day tomorrow (see previous post for details). I've emptied the shop, then I have to consolidate everything down so it will fit in the car.

I thought I'd let you all know that I now have undyed scrim in stock - no photo, as it does look boring in 2D, but wonderful once it's added to textile projects. I've been asked to stock it several times, and now it's here. I'll have some with me on Saturday. I put some in the shop yesterday and it's already gone - I'd better cut more of that too!

Regional Day Goodies

I've been busy the last few days getting supplies ready for the Embroiderers' Guild Regional Day on Saturday. The shop is littered with boxes and baskets crammed full of goodies: Oliver Twists threads and fibres, Valdani threads, Craftynotions moulds, puff paint, gilding wax, rusting powder and stamps, plus sari ribbon and wool tops. This is just a selection!

If you happen to pop into the shop this week, you'll have the chance to delve in and choose the pick of the crop before they are all packed into my car for the trip to Writtle on Friday evening. Of course, what's left will be going on the shelves next week, but I've got no idea what will be left!

I've found a supplier of Transfer Paints, and they arrived today. Just a few basic colours to begin with (apart from the Gold, which should be interesting) but I'll get more if you like them. I've had a bit of a go, and they are easy to use; they are ready mixed, so none of that getting powder everywhere! They can be used with water to make them lighter, and I do have the the extender and thickener to make them even more versatile. Perfect for using with spunbonds like Lutradur and Evolon, they are available online, or in the shop.

I've also got some new trimmings in: you can see here the tiny ric rac that has joined the other sizes, together with a little bobble braid that I couldn't resist!

Last today, I've had some more of that gorgeous woolfelt in, including the Christmas colour range. These are packs of 15 six inch squares in lovely colours, and so soft!

Another magazine and news of a good day out

You don't get one for ages, then two come along at once! Cloth Paper Scissors arrived just as I'd posted about Somerset Studio, but I didn't have time to tell you about it yesterday.

This issue concentrates on fabric for a change - felting, recycling plastic bags into fabric, fabric books, wearable art, lettering, digital collage, art journaling on canvas and mixed media books. All very scrummy. There are also artist profoles and plenty of ideas.

I thought I'd also let you know about new stock I'm getting in. I've found a supplier of transfer paints, and they should be here in a few days. Just a few basic colours to start with, but there is a good range, so I'll get more if they are popular.

I've also been getting lots of stock in ready for the Embroiderers' Guild Eastern Regional Day in Chelmsford. Lots of yummy Oliver Twists threads and fibres and Craftynotions threads and mixed media, together with lots of books and other selected items from the shop will be wending their way to Writtle on 2nd July.

There will be lots of other traders, and the lectures look good; Dennis Northdruft, curator of the Fashion & Textile Museum on 'Zandra Rhodes' and in the afternoon Lesleie Morgan's lecture is entitled 'At my mother's knee and in other joints'. There are also exhibitions from local textile groups, demonstations and a raffle. It looks to be a great day out - tickets are £7.50 on the door and there may be tickets to the lectures available on the day at £5 each. You can contact dianehobbit for more information.

Somerset Studio has just arrived. The theme for this issue is books - the classics in particular - and includes designs based on Chaucer, HG Wells, Frances Hodgeson Burnett and Mark Twain. There are also projects based on poppy pods, paper collage, and even a project of cards based on tokens from The Foundling Hospital in London (one for you Janette!). There are also artist profiles, some lovely artists' papers and clip art for you to use and lots of ideas and inspiration.

I very much enjoyed her light-hearted presentation and was inspired by her machine embroidered pictures - so much so that I've signed up for her workshop in July. There may even be a place or two left, so let me know if you would like to come and I'll pass your name on.

Catching Up

Been a bit manic the last couple of days trying to finish my last piece for my City and Guilds, but finally done now, despite a few last minute hitches, and it is now hanging in The Gallery for a few days before I take it for assessment on Thursday. That's the final day at college, so I have a lot to do before then. I won't finish everything, but I have a few extra weeks to complete. I've also decided to go back to college in September to join the Creative Embroidery class. Totally vocational this time; no exams or pressure to finish anything!

Here are a few more pictures of our end of year exhibition as promised. Some of the work is now in the Craft Arena Gallery with, hopefully, a few more to collect on Thursday. Do come along and see them.

Beginning of the End

I've been helping set up our City & Guilds end of year exhibition today. It is being held at North & West Essex Adult Community College, Northbrooks House, Northbrooks, Harlow, Essex CM19 4DS on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June from 10 am until 4pm. Refreshments will be available and on Saturday there will be demonstrations. Do come along if you can, there is some lovely work on display. I didn't manage to get my last piece finished in time, but hopefully it will be finished by the end of next week. It's been a long journey - eight years altogether - not always a smooth ride but one I wouldn't have missed for the world.

I still have a way to go, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! Who would have thought all those years ago that by the end of the course I would be working with textiles on a daily basis with my own little shop and Gallery? Certainly not me!

I've been busy this afternoon packing napkins! I received a delivery with some lovely designs last week, and decided that no one would really want packs of 20 of the same design, so I've split them up into packs. The 'Africa' pack, above, contains five different designs, and 'Birds and Butterflies' has four designs.
These napkins can be combined with many types of mixed media, for book covers, decoupage, decorating picure frames, containers and used to enhance fabric. If these designs prove popular, I'll get more, so let me know what you think. Both sets are now for sale on the Craft Arena website.

More Dress It Up Buttons have arrived too. I've always stocked these, but in very limited amounts. The picture shows just a small selection of the colours and styles now available and there are more on the way!
I'm still working hard on my City and Guilds. I have a Brother 1500 embroidery machine in the studio at the moment, and thought I'd take advantage of this and have made a tassel using one of the lace patterns on Romeo dissolveable film and some threads from an Oliver Twists Happy Bag. What do you think? The machine is a lot easier to use that I expected, and I'll be quite sad when it has to go back!

Somerset Summer

Two long-awaited magazines arrived today; Sew Somerset and Art Quilting Studio.

Sew Somerset has plenty of projects to keep stitchers happy, pretty little houses, vintage projects, lots of ideas for fabric books, art dresses, memory quilts and booksicons, jewellery cases, batik, fabric greeting cards, fabric and wire cuffs plus lots, lots more. Plenty of inspiration here!

Art Quilting Studio hasn't been published for a while, and it is a welcome return. This issue is cramed full of quilting and embroidery projects including printing with disperse (transfer) dyes, log cabin with a difference, mixed media quilting, applique, painting cloth and artist profiles. A really lovely book.

I have limited copies of these magazines available, so don't wait too long to get them!

Catching up

Phew, what a week! On Wednesday morning I had a training session, sponsored by my bank, and when I came back I immediately started putting the finishing touches to my book (see previous entry). Thursday after college saw me packing up the shop ready to take it to Essex & Suffolk Quilters meeting in Colchester. They made me very welcome, and I did enjoy watching their 'Show and Tell' session. I forgot to get my camera out until right at the end, but you may just be able to see the amount of work they had done on the tables. They had visitors from Chilford Quilters (I think - sorry if I got that wrong), and at the end presented everyone with a 'mug rug' for putting their cup and a biscuit on. They were kind enough to give me one too, and you can see it here. No biscuit, but just right for my cup!

This evening I'm driving down to Coventry for a Knitting and Needlework Trade Show tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to source some of the things on my shopping list. I'm coming back on Monday when it is the Chelmsford Embroiderers' Guild monthly meeting at Christ Church. I'm taking the shop there as well - just as well I remembered before I put all the stock from Thursday night's visit back on the shelves!

I've also been doing a bit of research for my next C&G project - no rest for the wicked!

Another one bites the dust!

Just finished my metallic piece for my City & Guilds. Not a very good picture I'm afraid, I had to scan it as I left my phone at home today. One or two challenges, but not too bad! The embroidery is goldwork, the design based on images from my Babylon design project, stitched on natural silk noil and the cover is made by layering organza over dyed silk noil, machine stitching over the top and then burning back with a heat gun. It will be used to hold pictures of my daughter's wedding.

Now for the paperwork and then my site specific piece.

Thursday is the 4th anniversary of the opening of Craft Arena at Barleylands. I can't believe it's four years - time seems to have passed so quickly! It's the old mantra that time flies when you are enjoying yourself I suppose.

I'm back to college on Thursday - I've not done much to catch up with my City & Guilds work, what with weddings and workshops, but I'm hoping to get a lot done in the next few weeks. It's a case of having to!

Deane's School Workshop

Had a great bunch of young people in the studio today for a workshop from The Deanes School, Thundersley. We made a little book using mixed media techniques; bonding, Tyvek, painted Bondaweb, transfer foil and stitch. You can see some of them hard at work below.

There were actually 8 pupils and 2 members of staff, but some had left when I remembered to get the camera out to capture the result of all their work!

I was a bit anxious, as it was the first time I'd taught such a large group here, and I was worried that we wouldn't have enough room, but I now know I can cope with a class of 12!

We also played about with Puff Paint and the new Gleam Gilding Wax, and I gave them demonstrations on bead making with felt and Tyvek and more techniques using Angelina. I also ran them through some of my design books. I do hope they come back and show me some of their finished projects!

Just to let you know that I'm using The Gallery space for a workshop today, so it won't be possible to view the work that is usually on show. The shop will be open as usual.

I'm holding a workshop for ten GCSE students plus two teachers. We are making a mixed media book and I'll post pictures later if I get a chance to take any!

I've just been catching up on some TV crafting shows with two lovely ladies, Sarah Lawerence and Liz Welch. We stock many of the products featured in these shows; Friendly Plastic, Karantha moulds, Karantha stamps and Dimentional Paste to name just a few. Do come and see the samples I've done with some of these great products which will give you and idea of how they can be used.

New Jewellery Collection and website updates

I have a new exhibition of Jewellery items on display until 15th May. They are by Ruth O'Neill of Lantern Craftworks in Maldon. As you can see from the picture, these unique pieces are inspired by the coastline, not only of Essex but throughout Britain. Ruth makes her jewellery from items she finds whilst beachcombing, and her work includes at least one sea washed pebble. Ruth donates her time and materials for the pleasure she gets from making beautiful things to help St Mary's Church. All items are for sale.

I've added more items to the website.

Now on sale online are Aurifil 50 weight cotton threads in 220 metre reels. These threads are proving very popular in the shop, and the feedback I've received from customers using them is excellent.

This versatile 100% cotton thread can be used for:

Hand applique - ideal for all types of hand applique, from needle turning to using prepared shapes.
Hand piecing - a great weight for hand piecing.
Lace - brilliant for both Bobbin lace and machine lace.
Longarm quilting - perfect for creating texture where you don't want the thread to be a feature. Backgrounds, stitch in the ditch, basing quilts, wholecloth quilting, micro quilting for dense background designs.
Machine applique - ideal when a very fine finish is desired. This weight desappears so your fabric is the feature. Use for a straight stitch, small zigzag, blind hemming and blanket stitch.
Machine embroidery - this thread is brilliant for machine embroidery! Great results every time. Use 50 wt in the bobbin as well.
Machine piecing - gives a great reasult with a nice flat seam every time.
Machine quilting - use for very detailed machine quilting. Perfect for quilting that creates texture when you don't necessarily want to see the quilting lines. Use the same thread in the bobbin.

I've also added some brilliant felt I've managed to source. It's been difficult lately to find felt that can be distressed as the usual source has apparently decided to add fire retardent to their products. The felt I stock comes in two weights 350 and 550gm². This makes these 30 x 45 cm sheets purfect for working with all sorts of heat tools, with the thicker felt great for sculpting with a soldering iron, as shown here. These samples have been painted with various metallic paints, including Lumiere and Metallic Masters. If you have been on a Lynda Monk workshop and want to try some of her ideas, these sheets are ideal. I currently stock both thicknesses in black and white - just right for adding your own colours - but more colours are available and if the need arises!

Business First!

I'll post some wedding pics at the end, but thought I'd let you know that the latest edition of Somerset Studio has arrived. This issue is another bumper issue with lots of ideas and projects which, although mainly paper based, can easily be translated onto fabric. Articles on lettering, colour, drawing, layering, transfer printing, and art journaling combine with artist profiles to give plenty of ideas and inspriation. I have also had in a couple of new books.

The first, Spunbonded Textile & Stitch by Wendy Cotterill, I have been waiting for for ages. I went of a workshop with Wendy at the NEC last month, and got a taster of some of the things inside the book. Can't wait to get experimenting on Evolon and all those other scrummy textiles!

The other book, The Beaded Edge by Midori Nishida, is full of ideas for triming work with beads and crochet. Ideal for me as I still have to finish the edging element of my City & Guilds!

A couple of new lacey bits also arrived. I love incorporating lace into my work - it adds texture, and can be dyed and painted all sorts of colours. The guipure lace flowers are particularly lovely.

I'm afraid you now have to put up with my going on about Jennifer and Alon's wedding. It was a perfect day - even the weather didn't dare misbehave. The setting at Blake Hall was lovely, and they couldn't do enough to help the day go without a hitch. (At least I didn't find out about any!)
The beautiful bride and her proud father didn't stop talking all the way down the aisle.

The panel on the front of the dress turned out OK in the end! And the cake.... the cake was delicious!

Away for a bit

I won't have time to post for the next week or so. This weekend I'm off to the Eastern Region Textile Forum AGM in Cambridge, where I'm looking forward to a bit of textile networking, learning, meeting new and old friends, as well as taking the shop. I always enjoy ERTF events as they are always thought provoking as well as informative and educational. The following Friday is my daughter's wedding so I'm having a few days off next week!

Today I finished the panel for the front of Jennifer's dress and I'll post a picture after the wedding. I'm a bit pleased with it, despite a few false starts. I can concentrate on getting myself ready now. I finished altering my hat today, and all I have to complete now is my corsage. I'm not sure if my original plan for that will work, but I have tomorrow to work that out!

I'll be back and posting soon, but I'm afraid I will be boring you with wedding pictures.

Trying to catch up!

I've been working on a couple of samples for my City & Guilds today, and finally managed to finish them this evening. The first is a cushion using manipulated fabric techniques, mainly chenille, with added buttons.

This is my Casalguidi Embroidery sample, which I was just going to bung in my sample folder, then remembered I had this little box frame.

I've also been having a go with the spindle whorls I bought at the NEC at the weekend. I'm quite pleased with the results, although it's not good enought to show here! I quite fancy spinning threads to use in textile work, and I must admit, I've always fancied owning a spinning wheel. Maybe something for my Christmas list?

I don't do much crochet nowadays, but when I got the Debbie Bliss Angel wool in, I just had to try it out. The pattern, from Crochet In No Time, called for three different colours, but I decided to use just one colour, and it only took 1½ balls. I should really have used a slightly smaller hook, but it seems to have worked out OK. This wool is soooo soft!

Now back to sorting out wedding dresses!

More moulds!

I love it when stock comes in half an hour after a customer has been in and asked for it. Sorry Sharne!

So, here are the rest of the Craftynotions Silicone moulds and Karantha moulding mats: Butterflies, hearts, flowers, faces, swirls, dots and squiggles! Also shown are the new Galaxy Flash flakes which are heat resistant and can be added as an inclusion into all sorts of media. Lovely colour!

I think that's about all the stock in now that I ordered at the trade fair in February, but I've another to go to in May, and I'm always on the lookout for something new, so hopefully more stuff soon!

A rather nice Blackwork book arrived today. Strangely enough, it is called 'Blackwork' and is from the Made in France series. It contains 50 projects which can be used for decoration or to enhance household items. Really pretty!

In the meantime I've got to finish preparing for my daughter's wedding in 17 days time (17 days? ARRGGHHH!) and then get stuck into the last of my City & Guilds projects.

Weekend Away

Just got back from my weekend away with Ray to Birmingham, where I managed to persuade him to accompany me to the Sewing for Pleasure/Fashion Embroidery & Stitch/Hobbycrafts show at the NEC. He said he enjoyed himself!

There were lots of wonderful displays from many wonderful textile groups, including smallChat where I met up with Christina Brazier who was displaying some of her work as part of this group. I also saw Lynda Monk, although I was disappointed that there were no spaces left on her workshop I managed to get a place on one by Wendy Cotterill where we played with Evalon. I'll try and scan this in when I get a chance.

The highlight of the show though, was an exhibition of work by Ollivier Henry.

Monsieur Henry is and embroiderer, teacher and costume designer, making all by hand these wonderful dresses, inspired by history. I've shown a close-up of some of the work - it is exquisite! I asked how long it took him to make one, but he said he had no idea! He just starts and carries on until he has finished. I know what he means, I'm much the same, I just wish my work was as inspiring!

I also chatted with some of my suppliers, including Sarah Lawrence of Craftynotions, and I was one of the first five people to her stand that morning, so I won a bag of goodies after telling her the password of the day.

I managed to spend some money; I've bought a couple of spinning whorls and fibres so I can learn to spin - I've always fancied having a go at this. If I get on OK, I may have to add a spinning wheel to my Christmas list!

This is a great show, so if you get the chance to attend next year, jump at it!

Playtime

Had a lovely day today playing around with some of my new stock.

I've used Hearty, an air drying clay which stays fairly soft once it has set, and can be stitched into (I've also got it in white). I've stamped it with some my favourite Karantha moulding mats, and smoothed over the new Craftynotions Gleam gilding waxes. The first uses the Spirals mat with Patina Blue, Peacock and Verde Gris wax:

This is the Linear 1 mould with Gilt, Rich Gold and Gold wax:

There are also silver tones, but my sample doesn't show the colours very well.

A few weeks ago, I received a supply of distressable felt. This is thicker than the sheets I already stock, and I've wanted to experiment with it to see what I could to with it. I put one of the larger bits into my soldering iron, and used it to make marks in the felt. I was really pleased with the results.

I've painted this sample with one of the Lumiere paint colours I hadn't tried before - Hi-Lite Violet. The pot doesn't look very aweinspiring in the display rack, but look what happens when you paint with it! It's my new favourite.

Next, I used some of the marks from the first sample on larger areas:

I've used more Lumiere on this sample; Halo Pink Gold, Turquoise and Halo Violet Gold.

This sample was painted with Bronze Metal Masters Paint and distressed with blue patinating fluid:

All in all, a successful day.

Before I go, just thought I'd let you know that I now have Friendly Plastic in stock. I'll be playing around with that next!

Trials and Tribulations

I've spent most of today on the phone:

a) trying to sort out customs payment from a parcel from the States. The Parcelforce website isn't working, so I had to phone an automated system which chucked me out halfway through pressing numbers into the phone. I was finally put through to an operator who told me I had to phone back in 40 mins once it had registered onto her system! Finally managed to get it paid though, and the good news is that my Ten Seconds Studios order should arrive tomorrow!

b) trying to sort out a bill I paid in October, which has disappeared into a black hole. Their bank phoned to find out where I sent it, so hopefully it will be sorted out now and I no longer have to worry about being taken to court!

c) arranging for another order to be delivered tomorrow on a pallet - I didn't realise a thread order would be so large! Mind you, they do come with a display stand!

So hopefully now I can get on with all things on my To Do List. No ticks so far :(

Embellishing workshop

I've just finished a workshop using embellishing machines with Jan and Pat. I usually do this on a 1 to 1 basis as I only have one machine, but Jan bought hers so both of them have enjoyed embellishing away for a couple of hours! Pat had not had a go at any sort of felting before, and although Jan has had her machine for a while, she wanted to learn a bit more about what the embellishing machine could achieve. This is the result:

There was much chatting and discussing of techniques and a good time was had by all. I must admit that I was not keen on using an embellisher at first, and resisted getting a machine for a long time, but I'm converted now.

This is a piece I've been working on for a while; those of you who have been to the studio in the last few months will have probably seen it. It is a work in progress, and probably won't get finished quite yet. I used the embellisher to embed the fibres from an Oliver Twists Experimental Pack into a piece of felt, then used machine and hand stitching to add texture. I'd still like to add more hand stitching, then I'll mount it onto a canvas.

The latest issue of Cloth Paper Scissors arrived today. It is brim-ful of great projects using techniques including collage, encaustic wax amd papier mache, together with articles and artist profiles.

I've been getting deliveries on the shelf this afternoon - Hemmingworth threads, Buttonbag kits; Learn to Knit, Mouse House, Owls and Love Hearts.

These are lovely kits to give as presents to little ones learning to knit and sew, or you could make them up yourself to give as gifts.

From Birmingham to Maldon! Had a great couple of days at the trade show, spent lots of money and I'm looking forward to some great new products being delivered over the next few weeks. Plenty from Craftynotions, some exciting new threads and some old favourites returning. I'll keep you posted as and when they all arrive.

On Thursday I'm of to the Tourism and Leisure Show at the Five Lakes resort to demonstrate and promote my workshops and Barleylands in general. I'll be demonstrating Tyvek beads, metal embossing and embroidery. I'll try and take pictures and post them over the weekend.

Mags and Books

Quite a lot of books in over the last week, and some have gone already. Rather than list the contents of all of them, I'm just putting their pictures up, and you can have a good look through next time you visit!

I've also had the latest issue of Somerset Studio in. Lots on incorporating text into your work, making books, collage, stamping, graffiti art and plenty of hearts abound. A bit late for Valentines Day this year, but you could get a flying start for next! I was drawn to the Allegheny Quilts article by Lynne Perrella. Some lovely papers are included in this edition.

I escaped for a while on Thursday and went to the 'Taking Liberties' exhibition by Fen Edge Textiles at Art Van Go. Do get along there if you get the chance, there is some lovely work on show. I took a few pictures, but I'm never sure if I should blog them or not. I'm sure Sharne won't mind my sharing some of her work with you though.

I've a busy week coming up; Stitches, the big UK trade show, is on at the weekend and I'll be visiting on Monday and Tuesday, then next Thursday I'm attending the Tourism and Leisure Show at Five Lakes, Maldon where I'll be demonstrating and generally plugging Craft Arena and Barleylands. I have free tickets for this if anyone would like to come along. It's the first time I've done a show like this, so it will be interesting, to say the least!

I have been trying to prepare my shopping list for the show today; it keeps getting longer and that's without all the new stuff I know I'll want to buy when I get there. I'll let you know what I bought next week.

For those of you bitten by the metal embossing bug, I have ordered the new Ten Seconds Studio moulds from the US today. Hopefully they won't take too long to arrive as I've seen a sneak preview, and they are brilliant! I've shown a preview of one of my favourites.

Evening Out

Last night I went to the opening of the Romford and West Essex Embroiderers' Guild exhibition in the Visual Arts Centre at Frances Bardsley School in Romford. The exhibition is called 'Stitched Up' and holds a cornucopia of delights! I particularly liked Sharon Church's pieces. With January out of the way, I'm beginning to receive some new publications.

This week I've had two. Stitch with the Embroiderers' Guild

The latest issue has just arrived, and it is full of stitching treats! I particularly like the chocolates - what a brilliant idea as a gift for someone on a diet, unless it makes them drool for the real thing of course! A yo-yo maker is used to create the fabric circles used in this project, and I've just ordered a few.

There are also projects on canvaswork, creating an embroidery from a favourite painting, using lace to make a beautiful bag, and a seaside treasure. With more projects, articles on exquite historical embroidery and more contemporary pieces, work from Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn plus information and news, this is an excellent issue.

What I did on my Holidays

On my holiday to Egypt, I dressed up as Tutankhamen for the 'Egyptian Night' .......

and did a little stitching. This piece is for my primary colour panel for the Minerva Group exhibition later in the year. I also read, sat on the deck, usually wrapped in a shawl, went to the Valley of the Kings and Karnak temple, plus a few other things I wouldn't admit to, usually involving making an idiot of myself!

Back to business, the new issue of Sew Somerset has finally arrived! On the cover, it says there are 125+ charming creations. I haven't had a chance to count them, but they are pretty.

Off on my travels

Nearly ready for the off. I just have to work out what I'm going to pack! Went to Bluewater today to buy some Summer clothes, and although there wasn't a lot about, I still managed to spend more than I should have done!

I'm taking some stitching and my sketch books, together with the design work I need to do for the panel for Jennifer's wedding dress. Should keep me busy!

I'm going to be working on one of the projects for our Minerva Group: this is basically a 6 3/4 inch square and can only be worked in primary colours. I haven't taken any new threads out of the shop for ages, but I did today and I'm going to be working with some Oliver Twists threads, which I love! You can see them here as they came off the shelf, and out of the packaging, with the threads plaited to make them easier to manage. The Tee Juice pens are to colour the background fabric.

I don't suppose I'll get a chance to blog while I'm away - from what I remember last time, the charges for using my phone in Egypt are horrendous!

I'll be missing the first two lessons at college, and the next Embroiderers' Guild meeting, but I'll catch up with everyone and everything when I get back.

Somerset Studio

Been up to my eyes in it this week, trying to get sorted for my holiday next week. Because of that, I've neglected to let you all know that the latest Somerset Studio is in.

As usual, it is colour themed, this time creams with splashes of pink and blue. Projects include hearts, owls, lettering, line, poppies, ageing photographs with ink (Craftynotions Coloursprays would be good), journaling and collage plus lots more.

A great inspirational issue.

I'm off to Egypt for the second time on Tuesday for a week, and really looking forward to it. While I'm away, Eileen will be taking care of things so do come and say 'hello'.

Not long now before I shut the Studio for Christmas. I've still got lots to do before we go off to my daughters tomorrow, and so little time....... For any last minute shopping, I shall be open until 5 pm today.

Commission Completed!

Earlier in the year I was asked to make some corsages for a wedding from buttons, and I've just finished them. As well as the corsages there are stems for the bouquetand a hair slide. It's always a little worrying when you've completed a commission that it will fulfil the expectations of the customer. I hope the bride likes them!

I'm now contemplating whether to leave before we are snowed into Barleylands, but there are still people out shopping, so I can't go yet. I've constructed my metre piece and now just have to attach it to the rod for hanging. I'll post a picture once it is totally finished.

Nearly Finished!

I've nearly finished my large scale piece for my City & Guilds course. I haven't actually attached the beads at the bottom yet - I need to decide whether I'm going to chop it straight, or leave it as it it. I was going to leave it, but the more I think about it, the more I think it would look better with a straight(ish) edge. I'll leave it overnight and decide in the morning.

The fabric was constructed using threads placed on sticky dissolvable film, with Romeo placed on top of that then machine stitched. Once the film was washed away, I stitched on three metal embossed panels, and made the beads with Tyvek. Makes it sound as though it only took me five minutes, but I started it in July!

Once I've finished this, I only have two more projects to complete, then I'll need to finish my samples and the theory part. Before the end of July. Hmmm...........!

December Quilting Arts

The latest issue of Quilting Arts has arrived, and it is an excellent issue. To celebrate their 10th anniversary, there are lots of great articles and projects, from a UFO challenge - which sounds like an excellent idea to me as I have so many - to articles on showing movement with stitch, innovative printing techniques using thermofax printing with paint, discharge paste and puff paint (not all at once!), printing with a brayer, air printing, stamping, screen printing, digital printing etc; reverse applique; quilting canvas, metal cloth (yummy!) and an article by Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn on creating cloth from stitch. I could spend days working through this issue. Just wish I had time.......!

Knitting v Crochet!

Whilst I was at home sheltering from the snow, I decided to knit myself a hat. Didn't get very far before I confused myself totally - it's ages since I tried cable, and kept losing stitches in one particular row! Back to the safe option therefore, and I crochet this cloche hat in a few hours. I've scanned it in, so the flower looks a bit squashed, and I may need to do a couple more rows as it doesn't quite cover my ears, but it's the first garment I've made in years! I used Debbie Bliss Glen wool and a pattern from the Crochet in No Time book by Melody Griffiths, both of which I have in the shop.

I went to the theatre with some Dunnett friends yesterday to see Romeo and Juliet at The Roundhouse. I was late getting there due to engineering work on the railway and missed most of lunch, but the soup I had was excellent and the play was good too.

Back at work as normal today, although I may shut at 4pm to get home before the melted snow freezes!

I had a lovely walk through the snow to Basildon Town Centre today to meet up with Liz Grant at the studios of Gateway 97.8, Basildon's local radio station to be interviewed about this and that. We recorded about 20 minutes of my waffle which will be broadcast during the Afternoon Show next Monday. I was asked for a favourite song which will be played during the interview, and decided on an Eric Clapton track 'Behind the Mask'. Difficult to choose one track off the cuff! If you would like to hear my ramblings, and can't listen on Monday, I hope to have a link on my website from Monday afternoon, and I'll post it here.

Liz was kind enough to ask me for lots of information for the radio website, and her blog, so I'll be giving her info on Basildon Stitching Club, Essex Handicraft Association, Eastern Region Textile Forum and Embroiderers' Guild. If I've forgotten anyone, let me know and I'll include it.

New Exhibitions

Two new exhibitions start in The Gallery at Craft Arena today. The first is by Sue Turner who is a member of the Octopus group.

The second shows work by members of Ladybugs Quilters, based in Shenfield.

Two very different styles of work, but both are stunning, so do come along and see them. Both exhibitions are on until the end of December.

I'd like to say a big 'thank you' to everyone at Basildon Embroiderers' Guild who made me so welcome on Saturday. I had a really enjoyable afternoon talking about my City and Guilds work and hope that everyone will be encouraged to give it a go.

A couple of new books are in. They were published in September, but it's the first time I've had them in - don't know how I missed them!

Drawn to Stitch by Gwen Hedley is a guide to using line and other forms of mark-making in textile art and embroidery.

Line is an essential component of textile art. When used effectively, it can convey texture, tone, form, movement and mood. Drawn to Stitch is a practical guide to the uses of line in embroidery and textile art, presented as a series of exercises designed to help the reader explore line's potential and develop their creativity. It covers line and mark-making tools, materials and processes - including printing and mixed-media techniques - and then moves into stitch, explaining how to interpret different line qualities from crisp and sharp to soft and diffused, from raised and overlaid to recessed and inlaid. Full of inspiring ideas, the book is illustrated with stunning examples of stitched-textile work.

A structured series of exercises helps the reader explore the limitless possibilities of line and boost their confidence in this fundamental area . The book is illustrated with stunning examples from the author and other leading textile artists.

Cas Holmes is renowned for her use of 'the found', and her many-layered, atmospheric pieces have been shown around the world.

The practice differs from recycling in that the objects often remain 'themselves' when they are incorporated into the work. The work is often conceived and built around the found object. The definition 'found object' can include a wide range of objects, from natural materials such as driftwood and leaves to old bits of machinery and vintage fabrics. Mundane objects such as CD cases can be used to create stunning pieces of art, or more sentimental items such as old jewellery can lend deep meaning to a work. This book contains a wealth of techniques and inspiration for incorporating found objects into your textile work.

These are both inspirational books that could take you further in your textile journey.

Our Christmas Charity Night is on Friday 26th November when we will be raising money for two good causes; The Burned Children's Club and Southend Breast Cancer Care. There will be lots going on including live music with a Robbie Williams Tribute Act, entertainment and an auction with some great prizes including meal vouchers for The Magic Mushroom and The Ivory Rooms, family Pantomime tickets, a helicopter ride and an electric guitar. Father Christmas will be here with a FREE present for the children, there will be a Christmas Farmers' Market, Mince Pies and Mulled Wine, Carols from local school children, (including a choir from Northlands School in Basildon, where my daughter Jennifer works) and much more!

I've been up to my eyes in it over the last few weeks - its amazing how long you can go between blogs without realising it!

Last weekend I was up in Norwich for the ERTF Conference and a study day on Friday at Norwich Cathedral Broiderers and Carrow House Textile Museum. Lots to think about and plenty of inspiration, including an exercise using thread and a hanger! I've left my camera at home, so I'll try and pop them up in the next few days.

I have a new exhibition in The Gallery in December. Ladybugs Quilters will be displaying their Calendar Quilt, together with other pieces of their work. It will be available to view from Friday 26th November which is also the Barleylands Christmas Charity evening, until 31st December.

Our Christmas Charity Night runs from 4pm to 9pm on 26th November, and is an opportunity to kick-start your Christmas shopping, enjoy an evening of entertainment and help raise money for The Burned Childrens' Club and Southend Breast Cancer Unit. There will be an auction and raffle and you can deliver your Christmas list to Father Christmas in his grotto. Local schools and bands will be performing, there will be a fancy dress competition and live music including a Robbie Williams tribute act. I will be supplying refreshments and mince pies and there will be lots more on offer, so do come along to see what is going on.

A bit of advance notice about my Christmas opening times. I'll be closing at 4pm on Thursday 23rd December and will open between Wednesday 29th December and Friday 31st December from 11am to 4pm when there will be double Loyalty points on any purchase over £5. We will be closed again from 1st to 4th January inclusive, and then 5th January sees the start of our annual sale. I only have one sale each year, so it will be an opportunity to pick up some bargains.
